Join HCCA, the Upper Gunnison River Water Conservancy District, and the BLM in restoring critical wet meadow habitat in the Gunnison Country!
When: Wednesday, September 3rd and Thursday, September 4th
Where to meet: Volunteers will meet at Hartman Rocks Recreation Area base parking lot at 8:30 AM and carpool from there to the project site (Gold Basin Road, Gunnison, CO 81230, directions here).
What: Volunteers will be using Bill Zeedyk methods to strategically place and stack rocks to act as grade controlling structures. The minimizes erosion in the area and raises the water table to support plants and insects needed by wildlife. Each structure is strategically planned and placed to slow and spread the flow of water within the area.
Why: Wet meadows scattered across the Gunnison Country are vital ecosystems that absorb water, foster abundant plant life, and provide essential drinking water and brooding habitat for our beloved wildlife. Through human use and prolonged droughts, these important ecosystems are disappearing. HCCA's Stewardship program strives to serve as support for our community partners that are committed to restoring these areas, while offering our community an opportunity to get involved, get their hands dirty, and give back to the public lands we all know and love.
