We are happy to be returning to Upper Willow Creek on National Public Lands Day to join the Bureau of Land Management in restoring critical wet meadow habitat above the Blue Mesa Reservoir.

When: Saturday, September 24, National Public Lands Day (Second day of back-to-back volunteer workdays)

Where: Upper Willow Creek, west of Gunnison

Parking: Paved parking on Highway 149 just south of the ‘Lake City’ bridge (where US 50 and SH 149 intersect over Blue Mesa Reservoir) Google Maps link.

What: Workday activities will include building low-tech process-based restoration structures using rock and wood materials. 

Why: We will return to Upper Willow Creek to continue the restoration efforts of this sensitive habitat.  Improving these habitats supports healthy wildlife populations, (including the Gunnison Sage-Grouse!) people, and livelihoods in our community.

Here are a few things you should know: 

• We will provide lunch and water for refills

• High clearance vehicles with off-road tires are strongly recommended

  • If carpooling, volunteers will need to wear masks

• Bring a water bottle & weather-appropriate clothes/gear (hat, sunscreen, bug spray, etc.) 

• We provide work gloves and tools

• Wear close-toed shoes, comfortable outdoor layers, and clothes you aren’t afraid to get dirty

• Please note that there are no bathroom facilities on site

• We recommend bringing a small pack to carry anything you may need (water, snacks, bug spray, extra clothes) 

Stewardship of public lands helps ensure their sustainability into the future. The above project entails spending a fun-filled day with like-minded community members giving back to YOUR public lands and supporting our lovable wildlife. They are great opportunities to get your hands dirty – and experience personal fulfillment – in furtherance of a worthy cause. Their success is dependent on public participation.
