The Upper North Fork Valley of Gunnison County is a beautiful landscape of diverse public lands, fragile wildlife habitat, outstanding recreation opportunities, working ranches, and is directly upstream from the farms, orchards and vineyards of Delta County.
It is also ground zero for rapidly expanding natural gas development, including fracking, wastewater injection wells, pipelines, roads and well pads. This includes the North Fork Mancos Master Development Plan (NFMMDP), proposed by Koch-owned Gunnison Energy, and currently under analysis.
As a Gunnison County business owner, I am concerned about the impacts to our economy and environment from the NFMMDP and other natural gas development proposals. Our business supports the protection and sustainability of public lands in the Upper North Fork Valley. As such, we request:
- No new gas development until federal resource management planning is revised to properly protect the resources of the North Fork Valley. Current planning documents affecting development date to 1983 (Forest Service) and 1989 (Bureau of Land Management). These documents are in the process of being revised, and are too antiquated to adequately address the numerous impacts associated with the significant expansion of gas operations.
- A full Environmental Impact Statement should be undertaken by the agencies instead of the proposed Environmental Assessment.
