Outreach

For most people—native or transplant, resident or visitor—the two million acres of public lands are the reason why they have chosen to come here. Through decades of engagement—events, parades, volunteer opportunities, and other grassroots initiatives—HCCA has spread awareness and education about the protection of the Gunnison Country’s public lands, waters and wildlife.

HCCA’s Outreach Program is a vital part of our conservation mission, aimed at educating and engaging the community on the value of public lands. Through partnerships with local schools, universities, youth programs, and community events, we connect people of all ages and backgrounds to the natural landscapes of the Gunnison Country.

Our outreach efforts include everything from guided hikes and festivals to classroom programs and public presentations—reaching thousands each year. We focus on fostering future land stewards, especially among youth and underrepresented communities, while raising awareness about conservation, land protections, responsible recreation, and legislative initiatives.

HCCA Hikes

Each summer, Sue Navy, HCCA’s Board President, leads hikes through Gunnison County's public lands, sharing insights into the many facets of HCCA’s work. Board members and staff occasionally join these hikes to enjoy the stunning backcountry while representing conservation. This grassroot initiative is free to the community and abides by leave-no-trace practices.

Engagements

local school groups

Western Colorado University

HCCA strives to stay connected with local youth through participation in classrooms within the Gunnison Watershed School District, Western Colorado University, and summer and after-school camps. Additionally, we foster a sense of community by hosting outreach events and providing hands-on learning experiences that inspire environmental stewardship.

Events

HCCA celebrates those who support our mission through hosting and participating in parades, fundraisers, potlucks, volunteer opportunities, and more. Funds raised from these events are fully reinvested into the organization’s operations to further our mission and solidify HCCA’s position as the valley’s leading environmental advocate.
