Saving Red Lady

High Country Conservation Advocates was formed in Crested Butte in 1977 to protect the 12,392’ Mt. Emmons (known locally as “Red Lady”) from the development of a massive molybdenum mine. On August 29, 2024, HCCA, in partnership with government agencies, nonprofit organizations, and the mining company, successfully accomplished this mission — declaring Red Lady forever mine-free!

Saving Red Lady–a condensed history

1977. An end-of-the-road town, a few hundred people, a breathtaking environment—so many elements of an idyllic life. What could go wrong?

Red Lady Prayer Flags carried our message to the wind

Ever see dancing red prayer flags strung outside community houses, businesses, or on the mountain tops? This was HCCA’s way of bringing about positivism, unity and awareness for a collective goal—to keep Red Lady moly-mine free.

Red Lady Testimonials

The first Red Lady Salvation Ball was held in Crested Butte in 1978.  It became a valued tradition for High Country Conservation Advocates and the community. The annual crowning of the Red Lady was a paramount part of this history. Each Red Lady was chosen for their devotion, support, and hard work toward HCCA’s mission to protect and conserve the town’s beloved mountain.  Below are stories, poems, and photos from some of our 47 Red Ladies about the fight to Save Red Lady, and its meaning to each of them.
