2022 HCCA Hikes Schedule

2022 marks the 30th anniversary year of our ever-popular Don Baker Legacy Hikes. We have continued our hikes in Don’s honor since his passing in 2010, with HCCA board member Sue Navy leading the weekly adventures. We invite you to help us celebrate our 30th season!

While we hope for continued abatement of virus potential, this year’s Wednesday hikes will be open to all who are fully-vaccinated against Covid-19. Proof of vaccination will be required, for the health and comfort of all.

Here is this season’s Wednesday hike schedule:

June 29 – Old Kebler Wagon Road: (E, 6 mi. r/t)

July 6 – Miller Ranch State Wildlife Area (E-M, 4 mi. loop)

July 13 – Deer Creek, from Brush Creek (E-M, 6 mi. r/t)

July 20 – Castle Creek (M, 6-7 mi. r/t; bring water shoes)

July 27 – Standard Mine via Elk Creek (M-D, 6 mi. r/t)

August 3 – Horse Ranch Park Loop: (M, 6 mi. loop)

August 10 – Green Lake on Mt. Axtell (M-D, 8 mi. r/t)

August 17 – Scarp Ridge (M-D, 4 mi. loop)

August 24 – Crystal Mill (M-D, 6 mi. r/t; bring water shoes)

August 31 – Oh-Be-Joyful (M-D, 8-10 mi. r/t; bring water shoes)

Please remember that (E) “easy” and (M) “moderate” are relative terms, and at altitude and in mountainous, rugged terrain, challenges exist, and could be (D) “difficult” for some. All hikes require suitable capability and acclimation, as well as water, hat, raingear, sunscreen, lunch, hiking boots and sense of adventure. All distances are round-trip and approximate. Hike descriptions are on our website. Registered hikers meet at the Crested Butte Visitors Center parking lot at 8:30 AM and carpool to trailheads. Please bring vehicles—some destinations depend on suitable clearance. Return times will vary.

We will continue to abide by Forest Service regulations and environmental ethics, limiting our group size to a maximum of 15 people each week, or fewer in certain wilderness areas. Please, no pets. We encourage you to register early and bring your friends to introduce to these majestic mountains and to High Country Conservation Advocates.

HCCA’s conservation work is multi-faceted, and we will share updates on Public Lands, Water, Stewardship and Red Lady as we enjoy our vast domain.
